Introduction

Career Change is not something that happens to someone else. Increasingly Career Change is a feature of a "normal" career path, or perhaps more accurately, career paths.

Whenever I have been seeking information, and sometimes advice, on the Internet about managing Career Change I have found too little real life experiences being shared to benefit others. I hope to change that, starting with sharing some of my own experiences and lessons.

My career journey, like so many others, has had some interesting challenges. Most significantly, I have overcome three redundancies in the space of five years. Redundancies create unique opportunities, sometimes. But sometimes they are just devastating. I will share some valuable lessons I have learnt about coping with, and thriving from, redundancies in future posts.

Through all the changes in my career so far, I have gained some very broad experiences from working with a variety of organisations in both the public and private sectors. I have applied for hundreds of jobs and attended dozens of interviews. Along the way I have learnt how to customise and refine my resume, selection criteria and cover letters. I have studied how to improve my performance at interview and put that into practise. I am keen to share my learning.

Having taken on career advice for myself, I understand what works and doesn't work from a range of options available to the career hunter. From resume writers to job agencies to career counsellors, I have found the key to success depends on building effective and trusted relationships with these career "partners".

I look forward to sharing more information and suggestions with anyone who is experiencing Career Change; and let face it, if that is not you right now... just wait a while!
